Four more level crossings on the Warrnambool line have been upgraded as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s $10 million investment to boost safety and make trains more reliable for local passengers.
V/Line crews have installed boom gates, bells, flashing lights and axle counters at Powers Lane in Birregurra, Cameron Street in Terang, Coombs Road in Terang and Harris Lane in Terang.
The upgrades will improve warnings for motorists approaching the railway line and the detection of V/Line trains at the level crossings, making them safer.
The completion of works at these level crossings means 14 have now been upgraded on the Warrnambool line as part of the Labor Government’s $10 million investment that once complete will see 22 road level crossings on the Warrnambool line converted to fully active crossings by the end of this year.
Once works are completed, temporary speed restrictions through the crossings will be lifted.
The works are part of the Labor Government’s Safer Country Crossings program, which is upgrading more than 50 high-risk regional level crossings across Victoria.
In a further boost, V/Line staff and contractors started more than $200,000 in improvement works on the Geelong and Warrnambool last weekend, helping ensure the line remains safe and reliable for local passengers.
The works on the Warrnambool section involved track resurfacing and welding, vegetation removal and testing the activation technology at level crossings along the line.
