All Eyes On Geelong As Melbourne Victory Heads To Simonds Stadium

29 June 2015

A-League champions Melbourne Victory will return to Geelong in 2016 to take on the Central Coast Mariners at Simonds Stadium.

The title-winning Victory will meet the Mariners on January 8 for what will be the second instalment of a three-year deal between the City of Greater Geelong and the Andrews Labor Government. A deal brokered by the clubs means the Mariners will be the “home team”, and Victory doesn’t lose a game in Melbourne.

Melbourne Victory is preparing its title defence, after Kevin Muscat’s men claimed a third A-League crown in May, but the Mariners have a point to prove after finishing the season in ninth place.

Geelong’s adopted A-League locals are still chasing success in the regional centre, failing to pick up a point in last season’s historic match. A crowd of 21,289 braved searing heat to pack Simonds Stadium and watch Perth Glory prevail, 2-1.

Events like A-League blockbusters mean more tourists for Geelong and a stronger local economy. The Labor Government is ensuring Geelong can host the big events all year round, by committing to a $70 million landmark redevelopment of Simonds Stadium.

The Labor Government is elevating Kardinia Park to trust status, giving the venue a new life and a secure future. Soon, Simonds Stadium will stand alongside the MCG as one of Australia’s great stadiums.
