Addressing Regional Housing Affordability And Supply

19 September 2022

Leaders across the government, community and business sectors will be brought together by the Andrews Labor Government to discuss our growing regions and innovative ways to deliver affordable housing.

The Regional Affordable Housing Summit will be held in Creswick on Tuesday 4 October to provide a forum for discussion, strengthening relationships and identifying challenges and opportunities to meet the needs of regional Victoria’s burgeoning population.

Minister for Housing Danny Pearson and Minister for Regional Development Harriet Shing will join representatives from local government, the community housing sector, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, members of Regional Partnerships and Regional Development Australia Committees and other peak bodies.

Delivering more affordable housing will be a key topic and the Labor Government will further outline its Affordable Housing Rental Scheme and plans to create more housing in regional Victoria.

The summit will also focus on unlocking more housing for workers and enabling local businesses to expand by hearing from civic leaders and partners working in regional Victoria about the challenges of affordable housing supply and economic growth.

A quarter of the Andrews Labor Government’s $5.3 billion Big Housing Build is being invested in regional Victoria, ensuring the economic and social benefits of the landmark program is shared right across the state.

In addition to the 25 per cent target, the Government has also established Minimum Investment Guarantees across 18 key regional areas that guide decision making on Big Housing Build investment.

“By building social and affordable housing in regional Victoria through the Big Housing Build and other initiatives, we’re responding to the increasing population in Victoria’s growth areas and creating more rental housing to support employment growth in regional towns and cities.”

Quote attributable to Minister for Regional Development Harriet Shing

“It is critical to grow housing for locals and people moving to the regions for work, which is why we’re bringing together leaders and decision makers to overcome barriers and increase affordable housing across regional Victoria.”
