5000 Poppies Project Honours Our Veterans On The World Stage

17 October 2015

The Andrews Labor Government is ensuring Victoria’s popular 5000 Poppies Project will be on show at one of the world’s most recognised events, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Minister for Veterans John Eren today announced project creator Lynn Berry would accompany acclaimed landscape gardener Phillip Johnson and showcase the stunning collection of handcrafted poppies before the eyes of the world. The Labor Government is contributing $200,000 towards the tour.

The 5000 Poppies Project is just one of Victoria’s long list of ANZAC Centenary commemorative efforts. The project group "planted" some 250,000 poppies in Federation Square as a tribute to the Australian servicemen and women killed in war, conflicts or peacekeeping operations.

The poppy is an international symbol of great loss at war, and hope for those left behind. An estimated 50,000 participants knitted, sewed or felted their contributions to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice.

The 5000 Poppies Project commemorates the important moments in our nation’s history, but also preserves the legacy of these memories for future generations to cherish.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show attracts more than 150,000 visitors each year, while many more tune in to the BBC telecast.

The 5000 Poppies Project will embark on a tour of Gippsland next month, before leaving for London next March.
