$1 Million For Swinburne To Boost Learning Support

19 April 2016

The Andrews Labor Government is supporting Swinburne University to help disadvantaged students access training and support.

Minister for Training and Skills Steve Herbert today announced $1 million in Community Service funding from the Labor Government’s $320 million TAFE Rescue Fund.

With this extra funding, Swinburne expects three vital programs to be expanded or improved.

The University will strengthen and expand its Apprenticeship Centre and Support Services to enable more efficient and effective engagement with current and prospective apprentices and employers.

Swinburne will use part of the money to create an online portal and operate Apprenticeship Centres that will allow apprentices at its Wantirna and Croydon campuses to access support to finish their training.

The funding will also support the delivery of general education courses and support services to a large number of migrant and refugee students.

The courses deliver general education qualifications for adults focusing on improving skills in reading, writing, mathematics, oral communication and information technology.

The courses also put a strong emphasis on developing skills for further training and preparing students to enter the workforce.

Coalition funding cuts devastated TAFEs across the state, ripping away funding needed to provide vital student services and support for disadvantaged and vulnerable students.

The Labor Government is making sure TAFEs and dual sector universities have the resources needed to support vulnerable students.
