Families in the Goulburn Valley community now have better access to world-class baby, children’s and emergency care, thanks to a major boost from the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Health Martin Foley today officially opened Shepparton hospital’s new cutting-edge 10-cot special care nursery and 12-bed paediatric ward – along with the next stage of the expanded emergency department – announcing the massive $229.3 million redevelopment is on-track to be completed later this year.

The newly-redeveloped emergency department includes 36 treatment spaces including nine short-stay beds for patients who need care for less than 24 hours – doubling existing capacity. It also boasts the latest technology with two new x-ray rooms, CT scan room and ultrasound room.

With 12-beds, the new paediatric ward has been designed to create a colourful and comforting environment, with bright artworks adorning the walls.

Providing care to fragile newborns and premature babies, the new 10-cot special care nursery boasts the latest technology and means specially trained staff can deliver the best care and support to families.

A 12-bed maternity unit and upgraded birthing suite are also complete ensuring more local mums and mums-to-be can give birth closer to home, family and loved ones.

Work on the final stage of the emergency department which delivers four paediatric emergency beds, nine short stay beds and four flex beds is on track to be completed in August. Final refurbishment works including refurbishment of the existing theatres and theatre support spaces is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The redevelopment has already delivered a five-storey inpatient unit, including 10 Intensive Care Unit beds, 64 inpatient beds and four new operating theatres, as well as a single-storey 16-bed dialysis unit.
