Security Upgrades For The Jewish Community

03 May 2018

Our state’s Jewish communities will be able to continue practising their culture and beliefs without fear, thanks to new security upgrades at local community facilities.

Delivered as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s Victorian Budget 2018/19, $3 million will go towards making Jewish community centres safer and more secure.

Over the past two years, the Labor Government has been working with the Jewish Community Council of Victoria and the Community Security Group to identify the organisations and sites with the greatest need.

The funds, included as part of the Multicultural Community Infrastructure Program, will secure these important upgrades. This grant directly responds to the needs of our Jewish communities.

The Labor Government has also allocated a total of $1 million for security upgrades at the Beth Weizmann Community Centre, home to many of our state’s Jewish community organisations.

In 2014, the then Labor Opposition committed $500,000 for the site and – alongside the Centre’s management – has consistently lobbied the Federal Government to match the investment.

The Turnbull Liberal Government, however, has failed to invest a single dollar in this important project at Beth Weizmann. It’s time Malcolm Turnbull stepped up and matched our funding – this project is too important to wait.

This additional Budget boost from the Labor Government will help progress the upgrade and recognises the pivotal role the Centre plays for many of our Jewish communities.

Across our state, the Labor Government is backing Victoria’s diverse communities, delivering new investments in community facilities, cultural precincts, events and festivals.

“In our proudly multi-faith state, every Victorian should be able to practice their beliefs in safety.”

Quotes attributable to Minister for Multicultural Affairs Robin Scott

“In recent years we have seen a rise in anti-Semitic abuse in Victoria. This is unacceptable. We will work the Jewish community and all Victorians of good will to keep our community safe.”

“This investment will mean that our state’s multicultural organisations can focus on what they do best – serving their communities.”
