Saving Families Millions On Public Transport

Fuel prices are rising and it's putting households under pressure.

It’s why the Allan Labor Government made public transport free in April.

Since Tuesday 31 March, millions of Victorians have taken advantage of free travel.

It has saved Victorians more than $13 million in just a week.

Free public transport is a temporary measure to make it more affordable for people to choose public transport and help take more cars off the road.

While this is a temporary measure to help all Victorians now, Labor has already been helping families save money.

Free PT for kids

From 1 January we made travel for free for every child, every day, everywhere – saving families millions.

Since then, young Victorians have taken more than 4.6 million trips on trains, trams and buses – putting more than $11.3 million back into the pockets of busy parents.

Families have already saved up to $195 per child since the start of the year with the Youth myki – and those savings will continue to grow.

Last year, a yearly student pass cost $755. Now, it’s free. That means a family with three children using yearly student passes is saving $2,265.

More than 500,000 kids have a Youth myki, meaning they can get to where they need to go for free.

Free travel on weekends for seniors and disability support pensioners

Labor also made public transport more affordable for seniors and disability support pensioners, with free travel statewide on weekends.

Regional fare cap

In addition, Labor has made regional fares fair.

The regional fare cap has saved Victorians $189 million since it started.

Previously a full fare return trip to Geelong cost up to $27.60 while a return trip to Ballarat cost up to $45.60.

Only Labor is making life easier and more affordable for busy Victorian families.
