The Carroll Labor Government is protecting Victorian farmland and urban fringes from over-development.
Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny today announced new green wedge and agricultural land protections.
These changes will protect farmland and agricultural while ensuring we can build more homes.
The reforms will:
- Strengthen green wedge and agricultural state planning policy
- Reduce the loss or fragmentation of rural land
- Support appropriate farm produce sales
- Minimise land use conflicts between sensitive developments (such as homes) and established farms
- Protect Victoria’s food supply in planning decisions.
These changes respond to recommendations from the Green Wedge and Agricultural Land Action Plan 2024 and Inquiry into Securing the Victorian Food Supply.
It found land use conflicts were making it more difficult and expensive to grow food close to cities.
The reforms will come into effect next month and deliver a consistent approach to protecting green wedges and farms from inappropriate developments.
Statewide planning controls will also protect the urban growth boundary and support long-term planning for Victoria’s growing population.
Only Labor will protect Melbourne’s green wedges and Victoria’s agricultural land and won’t change the Urban Growth Boundary.
Jess Wilson’s One Nation Liberal Coalition will block new homes in established suburbs and force all new housing to Green Wedge zones – leaving families without schools, hospitals and infrastructure needed to support them.
