Paying Lasting Tribute To Victoria’s Veterans

The Andrews Labor Government is keeping the legacy of our veterans alive for future generations.

Minister for Veterans Robin Scott today announced 32 projects that will share in almost $420,000 to preserve memorials and tell the story of our veterans through commemorative services and education programs.

The successful recipients of the Victoria Remembers Grant Program and the Restoring Community War Memorials and Avenues of Honour Grant Program were announced ahead of the State Luncheon for the anniversary of ANZAC Day.

The Victoria Remembers Major Grant Program will fund:

• $54,000 for the Australian Commando Association Victoria to create resources for teachers and students to learn about the Australian Defence Force’s use of Wilson’s Promontory National Park during WWII
• $50,000 to Greater Shepparton City Council to upgrade and extend the Mooroopna War Memorial to commemorate the service of local soldiers and nurses
• $44,000 to create the Remembrance Silo Art Trail in Mildura to commemorate stories of Australians who have served their country over the last century

Nineteen grants were awarded through the Victoria Remembers Minor Grant Program, including:

• $10,390 to the Werribee Half Battery so they can buy uniform jackets for their Victorian era re-enactments
• $10,000 for the Rats of Tobruk Association to improve their audio visual system which is used to educate school children about the Siege of Tobruk

The Restoring Community War Memorials and Avenues of Honour Grant Program will fund 10 projects, including:

• $16,076 to the City of Boroondara to install plaques along a new fence on the boundary of Honour Avenue and Hawthorn West Primary School, representing the original WWI Avenue of Honour and the 30 past pupils who were killed in the Great War
• $8,635 to go to Macedon Ranges Shire Council to install two new plaques at the Gisborne WWI memorial to include those who served in WWII and subsequent conflicts
