New Training To Deliver Safer Homes For Victorians

27 February 2024

The Allan Labor Government has unveiled plans for ongoing training for Victorian plumbers and builders to ensure they deliver safe and high-quality homes for Victorians.

Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny has opened consultation for mandatory Continuing Professional Development (CPD), which would extend training beyond the initial licensing or registration phase.

These proposed changes are designed to ensure Victorian builders and plumbers remain at the forefront of safety regulations and industry best practice.

Consultation outlines three options:

  • Practitioner-led approach – practitioners would be required to complete a certain amount of CPD, but the topics or types of activities would be self-directed and not mandated by government.

  • Government-directed approach – the Victorian Building Authority would set the required topics or types of activities practitioners would need to complete each year.

  • Combination approach – practitioner would be required to complete a mix of mandatory and self-directed learning. This provides practitioners with the option to engage in approved industry programs or complete individual CPD points.

The combination approach is the preferred option, which sets a minimum baseline requirement for all practitioners, with flexibility to adjust requirements over time in consultation with industry.

Public consultation has opened and will run until April 26, 2024. Community feedback will be a crucial factor in shaping the final CPD requirements. For more information and to make a submission visit…External Link
