New Schools, Classrooms And Courses To Greet Students

30 January 2017

Almost one million students heading back to school today will enjoy better classrooms, new schools and a revamped curriculum thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.

There are now 42 new schools in the construction pipeline – including 10 brand new government schools opening in 2017 – and more than 1,000 school upgrade projects under way across Victoria thanks to a $1.8 billion investment in infrastructure.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Education James Merlino today visited Berwick Primary School to meet some of the state’s newest students.

Some 153 preps will start at Berwick Primary School in 2017, including four sets of twins who have joined the school’s 1146 student population.

Suburbs like Berwick – in the Casey growth area where more than 50,000 students are expected to attend school this year – are booming. The Labor Government is investing in the infrastructure needed to support families.

This year new schools will open across growth areas in Craigieburn, Mernda, Point Cook, Cranbourne North, Cranbourne West, Clyde North and Epping North.

In 2017 the new Victorian Curriculum will roll out in all schools – including new subjects in coding, Chinese language and culture and Respectful Relationships – to better equip students for the modern world.

New programs such as Breakfast Clubs, the Navigator and LOOKOUT re-engagement programs, as well as the Australian-first Doctors in Secondary Schools, will mean students are better supported to thrive than ever before.

In 2017, approximately:

  • 953,100 students will attend a Victorian school
  • 603,500 students will attend a Victorian government school
  • 545,300 primary and 407,800 secondary students will attend a school
  • 79,200 preps will start school, including 55,000 in government schools
  • 69,200 Year 7s will attend a school, including 38,100 in government schools.

There are 1531 government schools, including 1128 primary schools, 80 primary-secondary schools, 239 secondary schools, 80 special schools and 4 English language schools throughout Victoria. There is a total of 2241 government, Catholic and independent schools in Victoria.
