New Public Housing For Heidelberg West Community

14 July 2016

Heidelberg West has a new $4.4 million state-of-the-art village style residential development in Perth Street for single people, families and older persons.

Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing, Martin Foley, today joined Member for Ivanhoe, Anthony Carbines to officially open the 18 new homes, which will contribute to making better neighbourhoods and create a balanced and sustainable mix of public and private housing.

Eleven units have been built for older persons and are fully accessible with lift access in the three storey part of the accommodation.

Residents of the new homes are close to public transport connecting to Northland and Heidelberg shopping centres, local schools and Austin Hospital.

All new 18 residences are ‘six star’ rated including their solar hot water services which should reduce utilities bills.

The Perth Street redevelopment is part of the Olympia Housing Initiative to revitalise Heidelberg West, Heidelberg Heights and Bellfield.

The project will replace at least 600 unsuitable or outdated public housing properties with newly constructed housing that better meets the needs of the community.

Perth Street is the perfect site for increasing intelligent social housing. It was an old site in need of a rebuild and its located close to schools, medical and shopping facilities.

The previous Government dragged their heels when it came to Olympia – we are making sure we are getting on with replacing the properties quicker to give those in the Heidelberg community quality public housing they deserve.”

Now that its built, the Heidelberg West community has state-of-the-art public housing for many years to come.

Since coming to government, 91 homes have been built, and we are on track to deliver a further 58 new properties over the next year in the 3081 postcode.
