New Metro Tunnel Stations Leading The Way In Accessibility

The Allan Labor Government’s Metro Tunnel stations are the most accessible train stations in Victoria – helping all passengers move smoothly and independently around Melbourne.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams today visited State Library Station, where a group of Victorians with low vision or blindness toured the concourse and platform with their Guide Dog companions.

All five new stations – Arden, Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac were designed to ensure the new stations meet Victoria’s diverse passenger needs.

There are escalators and lifts at every entrance, customer service counters and Help Points for travelers needing assistance with movement around the new stations.

The stations also have wide platforms, braille signage, tactile ground surface indicators, hearing loops, and accessible and Changing Place toilets for passenger use.

The stations will be step-free from street level, with both escalators and lifts to support passengers of all abilities, including those using mobility aids or prams. The platforms have also been designed to maximise independent boarding with Metro Trains staff available to assist with boarding, if required.

At Parkville Station, Travellers Aid will be available to deliver a free travel companion service for passengers with mobility needs to help them with navigation or provide wheelchair support as they connect to and from the nearby hospital precinct.

The Metro Tunnel is the biggest transformation of Victoria’s rail network in 40 years, doubling the size of Melbourne’s underground rail system, and paving the way for more trains, more often.

From Sunday, public transport will be free every weekend for every Victorian, everywhere, until Sunday, 1 February – when the new Metro Tunnel stations will be fully integrated into the wider network as part of the Big Switch.

Never forget, the Liberals called the Metro Tunnel a “hoax”. They consistently refused to fund it. Never in their wildest dreams did they think it would actually get built. Labor will open it on Sunday.
