The Carroll Labor Government has opened the new Melton Station while removing a further two dangerous and congested level crossings.
The new elevated Melton Station – designed, funded and built by Labor – opened to passengers this morning.
The new station
The station features four platforms with lift and stair access via an underpass – providing a safe and accessible way to cross the rail line.
It is also bigger, with longer platforms for nine car VLocity trains to run to Melton from next year – boosting capacity by 50 per cent on peak services.
Trains will now run on two new rail bridges over Exford and Coburns roads – making travel safer and more reliable.
Once fully completed, the new station will feature an air-conditioned waiting room, upgraded toilets, and a seven-bay bus interchange.
More commuter car parking will open over the coming months, bringing total spaces to more than 900.
The station precinct will be landscaped with native trees, plants, shrubs and grasses.
The milestone is backed by the recent removal of two other levels crossings in Melton and Truganina.
More than 73,000 vehicles travelled through the four level crossings every day, with drivers held up at the boom gates for nearly half an hour in the morning peak alone.
What’s next
The station has been built in preparation for Melton Electrification.
The longer platforms will allow Metro services to use two of the platforms in the future and electric trains to be housed at the new Cobblebank stabling yard.
The Carroll and Albanese Labor Governments have invested $152.7 million to undertake works to finalise the designs, scope and costs of electrification.
Only Labor is delivering for Melton and Melbourne’s west:
- the Melton Hospital is under construction
- roads across Melton have been upgraded – with more upgrades on the way
- six new schools have been built with other schools across Melton upgraded.
Jess Wilson and the Liberal-One Nation Coalition have already promised to cut trains on the Wyndham Vale Line. You can’t cut $40 billion without scrapping the public transport services Victorians rely on – hurting working people.
