Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings today announced the appointment of Victoria Elliott as Deputy Public Interest Monitor for three years.

Ms Elliott joins Principal Public Interest Monitor Brendan Murphy QC and Deputy Public Interest Monitor Janine Gleeson.

Ms Elliott was appointed following a competitive selection process. She has extensive experience working in law enforcement and investigative agencies, and was most recently Managing Lawyer at Victoria’s Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission.

Public Interest Monitors provide greater accountability around the use of covert investigative and coercive powers by law enforcement and integrity agencies.

They advocate for the public interest at the time when those agencies seek authority from courts and tribunals to use those powers.

Public Interest Monitors operate independently of government, with a requirement to report to Parliament.

“The community can have full confidence in her appointment as Deputy Public Interest Monitor – I’m sure she will safeguard the public interest when integrity and law enforcement bodies seek to use covert investigative and coercive powers.”
