New Cutting-Edge Trauma Centre To Save More Lives

26 June 2018

Thousands more of Victoria’s most gravely injured and ill patients will have access to live-saving care thanks to a multimillion-dollar upgrade of the Alfred Hospital’s Emergency and Trauma Centre, which is now complete.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Health Jill Hennessy toured the state-of-the-art centre today. It’s one of two major trauma centres in Victoria, giving critical patients from across Victoria urgent treatment and care.

The cutting-edge facility will be named the Eva and Les Erdi Emergency and Trauma Centre, paying tribute to the single biggest donation the hospital has ever received.

The upgrade is funded entirely by the Alfred Foundation and will treat more than 65,000 emergency patients each year, including up to 8,000 trauma patients who will receive care in the emergency department.

It includes:

  • An additional trauma bay and two new resuscitation bays
  • Eight new Rapid Intervention and Treatment Zone cubicles for initial patient assessments
  • A purpose-built assessment room where drug affected patients or patients with mental health conditions can be safely treated
  • Improved x-ray, CT scan, MRI, ultrasound and radiology services
  • Better facilities for our hard-working doctors, nurses and health care staff

More trauma patients are treated at The Alfred than any other trauma centre in the southern hemisphere. Patients injured in car crashes, falls and assaults are transported to The Alfred from all corners of the state.

The Labor Government is providing access to better healthcare by building bigger and better hospitals around the state.

With patient numbers increasing each year, and more needing specialist support – this project goes a long way to helping so many Victorians and their loved ones.
