Names For Five New Metro Tunnel Stations Revealed

28 November 2017

The Andrews Labor Government has revealed the names of the five new stations that will transform Melbourne’s train network, following an extensive public submission process that attracted over 50,000 suggestions.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan visited the Metro Tunnel worksite on Franklin Street today, which will be the site of the future State Library Station.

The new station under City Square will be called Town Hall Station, while the underground station next to the Shrine will be named Anzac Station.

The new station near Melbourne University and hospital and research precinct will be known as Parkville, while the new station at Arden will be named North Melbourne.

The existing North Melbourne Station will be renamed West Melbourne to better reflect its location.

The public submission process attracted more than 50,000 suggestions, with the entries showing that most Victorians wanted names that reflected the station’s locations.

People whose entry was chosen as the station name will go into a random draw this week, with one winner for each station to get a behind the scenes tour of Metro Tunnel worksites and massive Tunnel Boring Machines.

Each new station will be used by hundreds of thousands of people each day, feature world-class urban design, and revitalise open space above ground.

Major construction on the tunnel and five new stations will start next year, with the project to be completed by 2026.

The Metro Tunnel will free up space in the City Loop, to run more trains, more often across Melbourne. It will create up to 7,000 jobs and source almost 90 per cent of materials locally, including 93 per cent local steel.
