Multicultural Seniors To Become Tech Savvy

11 July 2016

The Andrews Labor Government is partnering with Telstra to deliver free technology training to help seniors from multicultural backgrounds get connected online for the first time.

Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing, Martin Foley, today announced 11 libraries that will be part of the expanded Victorian Tech Savvy Seniors program.

The expansion will now see support for seniors from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to access the program’s technology classes.

The partnership is delivering face-to-face technology training sessions to more than 6,000 seniors in over 40 library services across Victoria. Sessions cover a range of topics, including an introduction to using tablets, using the internet and social media and how to stay safe online.

Training will be offered in a variety of languages, including Arabic, Cantonese, Croatian, Dari, Greek, Italian, Macedonian, Mandarin and Vietnamese.

This program is part of the Labor Government’s action to increase community participation for seniors through the new Age-Friendly Victoria Initiative.

Age-Friendly Victoria will work with community and business leaders to better plan for the needs and community participation for people as they age.

Tech Savvy Seniors is part of Telstra’s Everyone Connected programs which aim to open the opportunities of the online world to everybody – regardless of age, background or ability.
