More Surgery And Care At Bigger, Better Shepparton Hospital

18 September 2019

The Andrews Labor Government’s major expansion of Shepparton Hospital has reached another milestone, meaning better care and more services is another step closer for local patients.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos visited the project today, marking the completion of the building’s external structure and the roof installation. The project has created more than 140 jobs in construction.

The Shepparton Hospital redevelopment will double the capacity of the emergency department, with 36 treatment spaces and nine short-stay beds for patients who need care for less than 24 hours. The new building will feature 64 inpatient beds, 10 intensive care beds, eight operating theatres and a new kitchen.

It will also mean more mums can give birth and start a family closer to home, with a 12-bed maternity unit, a 10-cot special care nursery and a 12-bed paediatric ward.

Builders are also getting on with the job of fitting out the separate single-storey dialysis department, complete with 16 chairs, to be up and running next month. It doubles the number of dialysis units currently on site.

The Labor Government also announced a $58 million boost for the project that will deliver round-the-clock imaging capability in the expanded emergency department, including two new x-ray rooms, a CT scan room and an ultrasound room. An additional operating theatre is also being built, bringing the total to four new theatres.

The additional funding brings the Labor Government’s investment in the project to $229.3 million, with the expanded emergency department, new paediatric ward and new inpatient tower expected to be completed in 2020.

The Labor Government is rolling out an unprecedented $3.8 billion pipeline of hospital projects to cater for a growing state, and has also given a big $100 million boost to the Regional Health Infrastructure Fund.

In addition, the Government has delivered on its commitment to fund 500,000 specialist appointments in regional Victoria, including 14,000 in Shepparton – this delivers the bigger and better hospital that helps deliver this.
