The Andrews Labor Government today announced $165,000 in funding to ensure the continued success of Shepparton’s Koori Night Patrol Program.

Over the last 15 years the Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-operative has provided a safe after hours travel option for the local Aboriginal community.

The patrol operates from 10:30pm to 2:00am on Friday and Saturday nights in Shepparton, Mooroopna and Kialla with the assistance of six volunteers.

Local Police and the Hume Regional Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee have indicated that as well as reducing contact with the criminal justice system, there was anecdotal evidence the night patrol had reduced incidents of family violence in the Aboriginal community.

Koori night patrols are an initiative of the Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement and operate in six locations in Victoria.
