More Station Car Parking And Safer Train Stations

10 April 2018

Commuters will find it easier to get a parking spot at some of Melbourne’s busiest train stations with over 2,000 new and upgraded car parking spaces to be built at key stations across the network.

The Victorian Budget 2018/19 will provide $60 million for new and upgraded car parking spaces, more secure storage facilities for cyclists and better access for pedestrians at busy metropolitan train stations.

Key stations to be upgraded include Belgrave, Sandown Park, Epping and Craigieburn with other stations to also be considered as part of the package, which is the biggest one-off boost to station car parking in Victorian history.

Car parking at Belgrave will be more than doubled with a new multi-deck car park to be built in the station precinct.

It will provide 470 new car parks for commuters – a significant increase to the 160 spaces currently available.

This will mean commuters will no longer clog up neighbouring streets with their cars and will free up more car parking in Belgrave’s town centre for local traders, shoppers and residents.

The station precinct will also be safer and easier to access with new lighting, CCTV, better parking and drop off points for coaches, and clearer signage.

These 2,000 car parking spaces add to the 3,000 new and upgraded car spaces the Andrews Labor Government has built at metropolitan and regional train stations over the past three years to help make sure commuters can get a car park when they take the train.

Quotes attributable to the Premier Daniel Andrews

“It’s frustrating to turn up at a station car park in the morning and find it already full – that’s why we’re building thousands of new car spaces to make it easier for people to get where they need to go.”

“We’re making sure more people can get a park at their local train station and that stations are safe and easy to access.”

Quotes attributable to the Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan

“We’ve already delivered more than 3,000 new and upgraded car spaces at some of our busiest train stations - with 2,000 more, we can make it even easier for more people to catch the train and help ease traffic on our busy roads.”

Quotes attributable to the Deputy Premier and Member for Monbulk James Merlino

“Locals have been calling for more car parking at Belgrave Station and that is why we undertook a feasibility study in 2017. These 470 extra spaces means fewer cars clogging up neighbouring streets and more car spaces free for people to shop in town.”
