The Allan Labor Government is backing more specialised, lifesaving care for Victorians when they need it most.

The Minister for Health today met the first cohort of new Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) intern paramedics for 2026 – who will soon hit the road across Victoria.

As experienced Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedics with two years of full time on road experience, the group of 24 interns will now start a six-week bridging program in their journey to become MICA paramedics.

The course covers clinical responses to respiratory, cardiac, paediatric and obstetrics incidents as well as sessions with specialists on welfare, wellbeing, pharmacy and leadership.

It helps develop their theoretical knowledge and practical skills, before they begin 18 months of on-road training alongside an experienced MICA paramedic.

Once complete, the interns will be stationed at:

  • Ringwood
  • Hampton Park
  • Ravenhall
  • Tarneit
  • Rosebud
  • Campbellfield
  • Bundoora
  • Morwell
  • Warrnambool
  • Ballarat
  • Wodonga

Working in pairs or solo, they can manage complex cases with advanced procedures, meaning patients get lifesaving care faster.

Procedures include airway management, head and chest trauma care, and dealing with cardiac emergencies.

The latest intake means there is currently 96 MICA interns at various stages of their intern program providing greater coverage and specialised care for more Victorians.

Labor will always back Victoria’s dedicated, highly skilled paramedics.

This includes investing more than $2 billion, growing the workforce by more than 50 per cent, delivering 46 new or upgraded ambulance stations, and training Australia’s first Paramedic Practitioners.

Jess Wilson's Liberals have an $11.1 billion black hole in their budget, and that means cuts. Cuts to hospitals. Cuts to nurses. Cuts to ambos.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Ambulance Services Mary-Anne Thomas

“Our MICA paramedics are some of the world’s best.”

“We will always back and invest in our paramedics, so they can keep delivering world-class emergency care to all Victorians when they need it.”
