Minister for the Environment and Member for Bellarine, Lisa Neville, today announced that construction work will commence on the $15 million redevelopment of Portarlington Pier.
Works on stage 1 of the $15 million Portarlington Safe Harbour development are expected to start in the first week of February, with completion of the new pier by mid-2015.
Parks Victoria has appointed PW Johnson Construction Pty Ltd to build the new pier section and, in a boost for local jobs, Moolap’s Coen Precast has secured the concreting work on the pier.
The project will support local jobs during construction, with more to be created as the full master plan is realised.
Portarlington is the home of Port Phillip Bay’s thriving aquaculture industry. The new 175-metre pier will boost the mussel farming industry, allowing for increased access and vehicle load limits.
The commencement of renewal works fulfils an Andrews Labor Government election promise and sets a strong foundation for the additional $12 million in works on the development.
Pedestrian and aquaculture industry access to the pier will be maintained throughout the project. Short term closures will protect visitor and contractor safety when equipment is being moved around the construction area.
