More Disability Supports For Inner Gippsland

03 October 2017

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will be rolled out to Inner Gippsland from today, giving an additional 1300 Victorians the support and services they need for the first time.

Speaking in Morwell today to mark the milestone, Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing Martin Foley - joined by Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing - said the NDIS was profoundly changing the way supports and services are funded and delivered to Victorians with disabilities.

Wimmera South West and Ovens Murray are also rolling out the NDIS - giving greater access to support and services for 400 people with disabilities for the first time. Almost 11,000 Victorians will access the NDIS in the three areas when the scheme is fully rolled out.

The NDIS is a national approach to providing individualised support and services to people with disabilities.

It will mean better outcomes for people as well as their families and carers, who will have greater choice and control over the services and decisions affecting their lives. The scheme will support more than 105,000 Victorians and will be fully operational across the state by mid-2019.

Around 16,500 Victorians were receiving support under the NDIS in June, which is being delivered through a funding partnership between the Commonwealth and the Andrews Labor Government.

By the time the scheme is fully operational, Victoria’s investment will be $2.5 billion a year.

Quote attributable to Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing

"The NDIS will help hundreds of local families in this community to get better disability support – and the Andrews Labor Government will be out visiting communities like Morwell to explain the scheme, what to expect and how to make the most out of the new opportunities it brings."
