Massive Boost To Construction Work In Victoria

22 August 2018

The Andrews Labor Government’s strong infrastructure pipeline is driving a building boom, with construction work completed in Victoria growing by a massive 18.6 per cent over the year while the national total fell.

Australian Bureau of Statistics data released today confirms construction work undertaken in Victoria is up by $2.18 billion over the year, the highest dollar-value growth of all the states.

In the June quarter alone, construction rose by 3.9 per cent or $514.8 million – more than double the national increase of 1.6 per cent.

For the year, while construction work in Victoria was up 18.6 per cent, on a national level it was down 0.1 per cent.

Engineering construction led Victorian growth during the year, with a 32.6 per cent increase, while non-residential building construction was the driver of growth in the June quarter, with a 15 per cent increase.

Victoria now contributes more than a quarter of the total value of construction work completed across the nation.

Since November 2014, the Andrews Labor Government’s extensive infrastructure program has contributed to the creation of 370,000 Victorian jobs – 234,300 of them full time.
