Leading Policy Informed By Experts

24 October 2017

The Andrews Labor Government has appointed an expert independent panel to guide how Victoria can most effectively reduce its emissions.

Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio today appointed members to the Independent Expert Panel.

Mr Greg Combet AM will chair the Panel with members Dr Penny Whetton and Dr Lorraine Stephenson.

The members have significant experience in climate change science, low emissions technologies and climate policy.

The Interim Targets Independent Expert Panel will provide advice on interim emissions targets for 2021-25 and 2026-30, to set Victoria on a path to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

The panel’s advice will include indicative trajectories to net zero emissions by 2050 and potential emissions reduction opportunities to achieve the targets.

The panel has been established in line with the Climate Change Act 2017, and will consider economic, environmental and social circumstances and impacts, as well as the latest climate science, national and global climate action, low-emissions technology and progress in reducing Victoria’s emissions.

The Climate Change Act 2017 provides Victoria with a world-leading legislative foundation to manage climate change risks, maximise the opportunities that arise from decisive action, and drive Victoria’s transition to a net zero emissions, climate resilient community and economy.

The Act sets out a clear policy framework and a pathway to 2050 that is consistent with the Paris Agreement to keep global temperature rise well below 2 degrees Celsius.

The Act provides a platform for subsequent action by government, community and business and the long-term perspective and policy stability needed to drive innovation and investment.

The panel’s final report will be delivered by 8 June 2018. For further details and the panel’s terms of reference, visit climatechange.vic.gov.au/reducing-emissions.External Link
