Melbourne has won the rights to host the high octane international netball event, Fast5 Netball World Series – making Victoria the first Australian state to hold the event.
Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren today joined Netball Australia deputy chief executive Marne Fechner at Hisense Arena, where the world’s top six netball nations will take to the court for the next three years.
Fast5 Netball is the bold new variation of one of the world’s most popular sports. The shortened, action-packed contests pit netball’s best against one another in fierce five-a-side battles. Multiple point shots and double-point power plays keep fans on the edge of their seats.
Netball is played by 20 million people in 80 countries all around the world, and the Fast5 Netball World Series is giving the game added spice. Melbourne secures hosting rights for the tournament at the perfect time, as the Australian Fast5 Flyers aim to capture their first Fast5 crown.
Fast5 Netball World Series is the latest addition to Victoria’s enviable calendar of events. Visitors from all over Australia and the world routinely flock to Victoria to attend our long list of events, and they’re here keeping our businesses busy and economy strong. Major events contribute $1.8 billion to Victoria’s economy annually.
Victoria is the events capital, and we want to stay that way. The Labor Government is contributing an additional $80 million towards its events war chest, while the establishment of Visit Victoria will confirm the state as Australia’s leading location for the biggest and best sport, cultural and business events.
The first Fast5 Netball World Series instalment begins at Hisense Arena in October 2016.
