The Andrews Labor Government will create a Veterans Heritage and History Strategy, to safeguard our wartime legacy for future generations.
Minister for Veterans John Eren today announced $1 million for the Strategy, which will be rolled out later this year, and will support conservation and preservation activities that protect our significant war heritage.
Australia’s brave servicemen and women have protected our nation for decades, and it’s our duty to preserve their legacy. The Strategy will map existing war heritage sites, including avenues of honour, and better identify the heritage sites that need protection or support.
The Veterans Heritage and History Strategy will include a Heritage Roadshow, which will provide all Victorians with the opportunity to have their war-related objects examined by a team of experts.
As part of the strategy, the Labor Government will establish the War Heritage and History Collections Training Program, aimed at helping ex-service organisations identify items of significance, develop preservation and education plans and digitalise their catalogues.
The Strategy will complement a number of the Labor Government’s initiatives that commemorate our veterans and our wartime contribution.
The Government has already committed $5 million towards a long list of activities that mark the 100-year anniversary of the Gallipoli landings. This year, the Government will commit $1 million to commemorate 50 years since the Battle of Long Tan.
