The Allan Labor Government is making it easier for families across West Gippsland and the Bass Coast to get the care they need, closer to home.

Minister for Health Infrastructure Melissa Horne today announced a $65 million investment to deliver major upgrades to West Gippsland Hospital and Wonthaggi Hospital.

At West Gippsland Hospital and Cooinda Lodge aged care facility in Warragul, critical infrastructure upgrades will be delivered to ensure the hardworking staff can continue to deliver care for the community.

Detailed planning for a new hospital is also continuing, including looking at possible uses for its historic buildings, once the new site is up and running.

At Wonthaggi Hospital, Labor will deliver a new pharmacy, pathology clinic, and medical imaging suite to ensure locals on the Bass Coast get the care they need sooner.

Labor has already delivered a massive $115 million redevelopment – with new operating theatres, a procedure room, emergency department and an inpatient ward opening in 2022.

This investment in a bigger and better hospital means staff are now able to now treat an additional 26,000 emergency department patients every year.

The Victorian Health Building Authority is now in the process of planning for future stages of the hospital.

Across Gippsland and the Bass Coast, Labor has made significant investments in health infrastructure, including:

  • a $223.5 million expansion and upgrade of the Latrobe Regional Hospital
  • a $73 million expansion of the Latrobe Regional Hospital (Stage 2)
  • new ambulance stations in Traralgon, Moe, Warragul and Morwell
  • the Phillip Island Community Hospital.
