Labor Is Bringing TAFE Back To The West

Labor is continuing to rebuild and expand Victoria’s TAFE system that the Liberals gutted with cuts.

Minister Brooks today unveiled the first look at designs for the new $55 million Kangan Institute campus in Melton.

The world-class training facility is close to where thousands of Victorians live, saving them time and money.

The new campus will open in 2028.

It will revolutionise vocational education in the west and deliver training to around 800 students per year.

The campus will be near the train station, close to schools and the future hospital.

It will include workshops for construction, gas fitting, welding, refrigeration and plumbing.

There will also be an emerging technologies lab and a cybersecurity simulation space.

Labor also is building new TAFE campuses in Sunbury, Geelong and Bendigo.

But this is all at risk under Jess Wilson’s cuts program.

Victorians remember the shambles when the Liberals were last in power.

They sacked more than 2,000 TAFE teachers, shut 22 TAFE campuses and savagely ripped $1 billion from TAFEs.

Jess Wilson’s $40 billion in cuts can’t happen without cutting vital infrastructure, just like this new TAFE campus.

Labor believes all Victorians should have access to quality vocational training.

That’s why we’ve guaranteed Free TAFE, so students can get the skills they need for the jobs they want for free.

More than 245,000 students have benefited from Labor’s Free TAFE since it began in 2019.

It’s saved them more than $816 million in tuition fees – an average of more than $3,300 per student.

Labor will always back Free TAFE and keep investing in quality TAFE facilities.
