Victoria's elections should be decided by Victorians - not by who has the deepest pockets.
That's why the Allan Labor Government is introducing new laws this week to restore Victoria's political donation rules after the High Court struck them down in April.
The Electoral Further Amendment Bill 2026 will cap donations, ban foreign money, and require full transparency so no one can buy an unfair advantage at the ballot box.
Under the new laws:
- Political donations will be capped at $7,500 over four years
- All foreign donations will be banned
- Anonymous donations above $1,250 will be prohibited
- Donations of $1,250 or more must be disclosed in real time
- New candidates and parties will be able to receive double the standard cap to get a foothold
State public funding will be restored for eligible electoral participants because public funding is core to free and fair elections.
The legislation will also require full transparency on all donations made since the High Court decision was handed down.
Labor, the Liberals and the Nationals will each be required to return money transferred to their nominated entities between 1 July 2023 and 14 April 2026 above the general cap of $5,030 that remained in their state campaign accounts on 15 April 2026.
Only Labor will protect Victoria’s democracy.
