John Harnden Appointed Australian Grand Prix Chairman

Leading sports executive John Harnden AM has been appointed chairman of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation board.

Premier Daniel Andrews today announced that Mr Harnden would replace Melbourne Formula 1® Grand Prix stalwart Ron Walker AC CBE, who is retiring after 23 years in the role.

Mr Harnden is one of world sport’s most respected executives, who most recently served as chief executive of the ICC Cricket World Cup – an event worth $150 million to Victoria’s economy. He joined the AGPC board in 2006, before becoming Mr Walker’s deputy in 2007.

Mr Harnden brings a wealth of leadership and governance experience in delivering world-renowned entertainment and sporting events. He has forged a global profile working for the South Australian Cricket Association, Village Roadshow International Theme Parks, as ICC Cricket World Cup chief executive and CEO of the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

The Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix is one of world sport’s most iconic events. Thousands of supporters flock to Victoria from all over the world, while images of Melbourne are beamed to countries right around the globe. The AGPC is the peak body responsible for delivering the event, as well as the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island.

Mr Andrews paid tribute to Mr Walker, whose leadership has ensured the Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix is one of the most successful events in world sport.
