Improving School Crossings To Keep Our Kids Safe

15 April 2018

As thousands of kids go back to school today, the Andrews Labor Government is investing in safer school crossings for school communities across the state.

The Victorian Budget 2018/19 will include $23.9 million to improve road safety around our schools, while also providing a massive boost to Victoria’s School Crossing Supervisor Program.

Skye Primary School in Carrum will be one of the first to benefit from the $5 million package of safety upgrades, which will include crossing improvements and electronic variable speed limit signs on high risk roads.

Another four projects have been announced, with Bass Valley Primary School, Kallista Primary School, St Mary’s Primary School in Lancefield and Christ Our Holy Redeemer Primary School in Oakleigh all set to benefit, with dozens more school safety announcements to follow over the coming weeks.

The Labor Government has also announced $18.9 million to continue the popular School Crossing Supervisor Program, which has been keeping our kids safe for more than 40 years.

There are more than 3000 crossing supervisors across the state – the highest number of any state or territory in Australia – with Victoria the only state with supervised crossings outside secondary schools.

A recent review by Transport for Victoria found supervised school crossings were an effective and cost-efficient way to improve safety around our schools.
