The Carroll Labor Government is helping farmers bring down energy bills and boost productivity by putting new technology to the test on Victorian farms.

Minister for Energy and Resources Jaclyn Symes visited Agriculture Victoria’s Ellinbank SmartFarm to open applications for the $5 million On-Farm Energy and Electrification Demonstration program.

The program will put new energy solutions through their paces, helping farmers see how they work before investing in their own businesses.

Grants of between $200,000 and $750,000 will support projects that test and demonstrate technologies under real farming conditions.

Projects could help farms use less diesel, improve energy efficiency or electrify equipment.

They could also help farmers generate and store renewable energy.

The trials will show farmers how the technologies perform, what they cost to run and how they could improve productivity.

That means practical information to help farmers choose what works for their business, bring down operating costs and strengthen their energy security.

The program will also help farming communities reduce emissions and respond to climate challenges, rising input costs and supply chain pressures.

Eligible applicants include agriculture industry associations, farming systems and Landcare groups, Traditional Owner and First Nations groups, Catchment Management Authorities and companies with energy solutions.

Labor is backing cheaper energy for Victorian farmers, while Jess Wilson’s One Nation-Liberal Coalition would rip up energy projects and leave farmers paying more.

Applications close at 5pm on Friday, 11 December 2026. For more information, visit agriculture.vic.gov.au/OFEED.

“While we’re helping farmers bring down energy bills – Jess Wilson’s One Nation-Liberal Coalition energy policies don't stack up and will lead to higher bills and blackouts."

Quote attributable to Minister for Agriculture Michaela Settle

“Victorian farmers are paying the price for a war on the other side of the world. Labor is helping them find local energy alternatives that cut costs and protect their businesses from the next global shock."
