Helping Councils Deliver More Affordable Homes

15 August 2018

The Andrews Labor Government is helping councils integrate more affordable housing into private developments.

Minister for Planning Richard Wynne this week announced $500,000 to give local councils professional advice and support on how to negotiate with developers to include affordable housing in their developments.

New changes to Victoria’s Planning and Environment Act 1987 establish a framework for affordable housing, define who is eligible for affordable housing, and create a pathway for councils and developers to lock in affordable housing delivery as part of a development project.

The package will help councils with

  • expert professional advice on negotiations and understanding a site’s capacity for affordable housing
  • a subsidised short course, delivered in partnership with industry and professional peak bodies
  • seminars and discussion forums with case studies to highlight successes and lessons learned.

This builds on the Labor Government’s wide range of initiatives to increase the stock of affordable housing, including public and social housing.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Planning Richard Wynne

“This package will make a positive contribution to the development of more affordable housing.”

“It’s one of a range of measures we’re delivering to meet the housing needs of our growing community.”
