The Allan Labor Government is preparing Melbourne’s west for another transport improvement, with the community invited to help shape plans for the removal of the Hudsons Road level crossing in Spotswood.
Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams today announced community consultation is now open on plans to remove the dangerous and congested Hudsons Road level crossing by building a new rail bridge, improving safety and easing traffic congestion.
A brand-new Spotswood Station will open to passengers in 2028 with modern facilities including improved lighting, CCTV, lifts and stairs – making the station safer, more accessible and easier to use.
Expert assessments have confirmed that a rail bridge is the best solution for the area, avoiding the need for land acquisition and relocation of underground services – meaning the project can be delivered faster and also minimise disruption for locals.
Elevating the rail line and station will also unlock opportunities for new open spaces, better walking and cycling connections, and more trees and greenery along the corridor.
Removing the Hudsons Road level crossing will improve safety and cut congestion for thousands of motorists stuck at the boom gates, which are down for more than 50 minutes in the morning peak as up to 50 trains pass through.
Local roads will also become safer once the West Gate Tunnel opens, with a 24-hour truck ban introduced on Hudsons Road.
The Werribee Line will be level crossing free by 2030, with works already underway to get rid of level crossings at Champion and Maddox roads in Newport, and Maidstone Street in Altona.
Across Melbourne, the Labor Government is removing 110 dangerous and congested level crossings by 2030 – with 87 already gone.
Locals are encouraged to have their say on the Hudsons Road level crossing removal project by Monday, 6 October at engage.vic.gov.au/lxrp-hudsons-road.
