Have Your Say On More Homes In The Right Places

The Allan Labor Government wants to hear from the community as we get on with delivering the homes Victorians need in suburbs that are already well-connected to public transport, jobs, and services.

The first round of consultation is now open for the next 23 train and tram zones – this will inform draft maps that set clear expectations for industry, council and communities on where more homes should go and make it easier to get more homes built sooner.

The next 23 zones out for consultation sit along key public transport routes and are some of the best-connected suburbs in Melbourne:

  • Cranbourne/Pakenham lines that will use the new Metro Tunnel: Springvale, Noble Park, Yarraman, and Dandenong stations
  • Frankston Line: Hawksburn, Toorak (Beatty Avenue), Armadale (High Street), Malvern (Glenferrie Road), Caulfield, Glen Huntly, Ormond, Bentleigh, and Mentone stations
  • 58 Tram: Toorak Village
  • Sandringham Line: South Yarra, Prahran, Windsor and Elsternwick stations
  • Belgrave/Lilydale Line: Blackburn, Nunawading, and Mitcham stations
  • Alamein Line: Riversdale/Willison and Ashburton stations

From now until November, the Government will work with communities to develop these controls – including through online and in-person engagement sessions. Communities will then be able to again have their say on draft planning controls before they come into effect.

A tailored approach is being taken for two inner city centres – Inner City (Yarra) and Inner City (City of Melbourne) – where high-density housing already exists but under-utilised sites near stations and tram corridors remain.

To unlock thousands of new homes in these areas, the Government will work closely with the City of Melbourne and Yarra City Council to identify strategic sites in the inner city.

This follows consultation wrapping up on draft maps for the first 25 train and tram zones, which received more than 10,000 submissions from the community, which will help shape the final plans.

By 2051, the Train and Tram Zone program will help deliver more than 300,000 new homes across these centres – giving more young people, families and workers the opportunity to live near the things that matter to them and their loved ones.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny

“This is about working with communities to ensure more Victorians have the opportunity to live close to public transport, their loved ones, and the things that matter to them.”

“The only way to make housing fairer for young Victorians is to build more homes – that’s why we've been overhauling our planning system because the status quo is not an option.”
