Hamer Scholarships Open The Door To Asia

13 February 2019

The Andrews Labor Government is opening up new career and business opportunities for Victorians with the opening of the latest round of the Hamer Scholarships.

Victorian professionals over the age of twenty-one are invited to apply for scholarships under the program which is designed to build language skills, business and cultural understanding and forge connections with key Asian markets.

The Hamer Scholarships is the only Victorian program targeted at industry professionals at all stages of their careers offering intensive in-market language study and cultural immersion in China, Indonesia, Japan and Korea.

Scholarships are worth $10,000 for China and Indonesia, and $15,000 for Japan and Korea.

Successful scholars undertake a minimum of five months of intensive language training at a nominated in-country university, while developing the cross-cultural links and lasting relationships that can lead to new trade and investment opportunities.

More than 280 Victorians have participated in the Hamer Scholarships program since it began in 2012 and many former scholars have gone on to successful careers as company founders, export managers, consultants and teachers.

The upcoming round in 2019 will be the tenth round for China and the ninth round for Japan, Korea and Indonesia, and will continue to build on Victoria’s critical engagement with those markets.

Applications for round ten of the Hamer Scholarships Program are now open on the Global Victoria website and will close on 17 March 2019.
