Grants Buy Uniforms, Equipment For Local Sports Clubs

03 December 2020

The Andrews Labor Government is helping sporting clubs get back in the game with new grants awarded across Victoria to pay for uniforms, equipment, training for volunteers and improvements to ensure long-term viability.

Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence today announced more than 580 grassroots clubs and organisations would share in $900,000 through the Sporting Club Grants Program.

The grants provide clubs with up to $1,000 for new uniforms and equipment, up to $5,000 for training coaches, officials and volunteers, and up to $5,000 to improve club operational effectiveness. Funding will help people of all ages and abilities take part in sport as the state moves steadily towards COVID Normal.

This funding is in addition to the Labor Government’s investment of $6 million in the popular program, as announced in last week’s state budget.

Grant recipients include Kensington Colts Junior Basketball Club which received $1,000 to purchase new uniforms, and Kyabram District Football League which is receiving $5,000 to develop a strategic plan for 2021-2026.

The Sporting Club Grants Program is part of the Government’s commitment to make sport more accessible and inclusive, stimulate local economies, build sustainable sport and recreation and volunteer opportunities, and increase local participation.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence

“Our clubs have had a tough year and we’re providing support for immediate needs like uniforms and equipment, plus investments in the future through training for coaches and volunteers.”

This is about giving more Victorians an opportunity to embrace an active and healthy lifestyle and tap into all the sport and career pathways that grassroots community sport offers.”

Quotes attributable to President of the Kensington Colts Junior Basketball Club Mick Bramich

“With our focus on encouraging more girls into the sport, this boost will also allow us to provide girls' uniforms rather than rely on what is left over from the boys.”

“Our children have been denied much this year and they are keen to get back to the things they love. Basketball is one of those things, and this grant will help make that happen.”
