Getting People Back Into Training And Jobs In Ballarat

24 November 2017

People living in Ballarat will have more access to the training and support they need to get a job thanks to the Andrews Labor Government’s Skills First Reconnect program.

Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney joined Member for Wendouree Sharon Knight and Member for Buninyong Geoff Howard to announce that Federation University is receiving $744,000 to deliver the program.

Fed Uni is one of 27 Learn Locals and TAFEs sharing in $19.8 million to support almost 3000 early school leavers and the long-term unemployed reconnect with education and training.

Participants in the Skills First Reconnect program will receive tailored support, including the development of a learning and achievement plan to make sure they finish their training so they can get a job.

The university will work in partnership with the Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre and Wendouree Neighbourhood Centre to deliver its program and reach more high needs learners in the region.

Participants will have access to training to increase their literacy and numeracy skills, which will improve their confidence and help them transition to further education or employment.

The program will also help people living in the Hepburn, Moorabool, Horsham, Central Goldfields, Northern Grampians and Pyrenees shires.

Through Skills First, the Labor Government is overhauling Victoria’s training and TAFE system to make sure every Victorian has the right skills for the jobs of today and tomorrow.
