Geelong Welcomes More Student Accommodation

26 April 2016

One of Geelong’s most iconic buildings, the T & G building, has been transformed into contemporary student accommodation, opening up opportunities to live and study in Victoria’s biggest regional city.

Minister for Training and Skills Steve Herbert today joined Member for Geelong Christine Couzens at the official opening of Deakin University’s Geelong CBD student accommodation facility at the historic building.

Designed by Geelong firm, Studio 101 Architects, the development features 33 apartments each with its own kitchen, bathroom and study area and access to a communal laundry. The design retains the building’s heritage charm while contributing to the revitalisation of central Geelong’s streetscape.

The Andrews Labor Government provided $850,000 towards the $7.8 million redevelopment project, which will help improve regional participation in higher education and improve the skills capacity of the Geelong region.

The project addresses the shortage of dedicated student accommodation in regional Victoria by providing quality, affordable housing and priority access for low socio-economic and disadvantaged regional students.

Deakin University has a key role in the transformation of Geelong as the city moves from its traditional employment base in manufacturing into new and emerging fields within the technology and services industries.

This Government is transforming Victoria into the Education State by making sure regional students have the skills they need to get the real jobs they want.

The Labor Government’s $34 million Regional Skills and Training package will also assist local businesses by connecting local workers to the training they need to find and succeed in the jobs they want.

Deakin’s next proposed investment will be a 300 bed accommodation facility designed to support the University’s growing international student market.
