Future Lead Architect To Drive Victorian Design

15 May 2015

The search is on to find the next Victorian Government Architect. The Andrews Labor Government has resurrected the position – after it was left vacant under the previous Liberal Government – to drive best-practice design across the state.

The Office of the Victorian Government Architect provides leadership and strategic advice to government on urban design and architecture, advocating for quality design and intelligent urban policy across a range of projects.

The Labor Government will broaden the responsibilities of the Office, which currently sits within the planning portfolio. Minister for Planning Richard Wynne announced the Office of the Victorian Government Architect will return to the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

This will give the office, and the lead architect role, the capacity to advise government-wide across projects. That could include road and rail projects, urban renewal opportunities and major projects.

An expression of interest process has now begun to find a new Victorian Government Architect. Mr Wynne said the government hoped to attract the best possible talent to guide future design.

Established by the Bracks Labor Government, the work of the office has contributed to some of Victoria’s most successful projects, such as AAMI Park, the Melbourne Recital Centre, and the Melbourne Convention Centre. The office’s independence is a crucial part of upholding world-leading design principles.
