Funding For $200,000 Walmer St Bridge Scoping Study

04 August 2018

The Andrews Labor Government will commission a $200,000 scoping study and business case for upgrading the century-old Walmer St Bridge in Richmond.

Minister for Planning Richard Wynne attended today’s rally to save the narrow footbridge, a major thoroughfare for cyclists and pedestrians.

The bridge is part of the Capital City Trail. Responsibility for its upkeep is complex, with Boroondara and Yarra responsible for the landing on either side, ownership of the asset itself unclear and surrounding land managed by Parks Victoria.

The long-running issue of the upgrade to Walmer Street Bridge was brought to a head with the application for an apartment development to the west of Walmer Street and the subsequent redesign of the Walmer Street Plaza.

With the development of the Walmer Street Plaza there is an opportunity to launch a coordinated process with State and Local Government as well as the adjoining land owner to upgrade the bridge and improve pedestrian and bicycle access.

The Labor Government will partner with the Walmer Street Action Group, the Walmer Plaza Coordination Group, City of Yarra and the City of Boroondara to develop a blueprint for an improved bridge.

The business case will be informed by expert advice to identify key issues and develop a vision for the upgrade of the bridge. The business case aims for completion before the end of the year.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Planning Richard Wynne:

“We’re delighted to announce funding for a detailed business case and design process for Walmer St Bridge – a critical piece of community infrastructure.”

“We’re looking forward to getting both councils and community engaged in this important work.”
