Funding Boost Brings Spring Racing To Mornington

31 October 2017

The Andrews Labor Government is backing this Sunday’s 2017 Peninsula Cup as part of a combined funding package of almost $180,000.

The Cup is one of the biggest annual racing events held on the Mornington Peninsula and this year’s meeting is expected to draw more than 8,000 people to the track.

The Labor Government is providing more than $32,000 from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund Raceday to support the event. The Melbourne Racing Club, which manages Mornington Racecourse, is contributing more than $147,000.

Patrons heading to the Cup will be treated to a variety of entertainment on and off the track, including performances by popular Melbourne based band, Northeast Party House, as well as two support acts.

The fashion conscious will also get the chance to make their mark in the Fashions on the Field Style Stakes competition and share in a $4000 prize pool. Children will be catered for with a range of family-friendly activities including amusement rides, face painting, an ice-cream van and a jumping castle.

Free shuttle buses from the Frankston Railway Station and Main Street Mornington will ensure that racegoers can get safely to and from the track.

This year’s Cup forms part of Country Racing Victoria’s Spring Racing Campaign covering 51 weekend and feature race meetings across regional Victoria between 23 September and 26 November 2017.

Since 2014, the Labor Government has provided almost $400,000 to support five infrastructure projects and four feature race days at Mornington racecourse.

The racing industry in outer Melbourne generates more than $375 million annually for the Victorian economy and helps sustain more than 3,720 full time equivalent jobs in the region.
