Minister for Education, James Merlino, today toured Fountain Gate Secondary College, where he met students taking part in an international program to develop their critical and creative skills to help solve the world’s problems.
The Future Problem Solving Program challenges students to tackle significant issues facing the world. It equips them with the vision, skills and tools to shape positive futures for the communities in which they live.
The Andrews Labor Government is supporting the Program at Fountain Gate Secondary with a $15,000 grant for 2015.
A team of six Year 8 Fountain Gate students won the 2014 Future Problem Solving National Championships, and in June will be competing against 3000 students from 26 countries at the International Championships in the USA.
The competition challenges students to identify a community problem and then to set about solving that problem.
The Fountain Gate students chose to investigate student engagement in the classroom and youth unemployment. They have developed a range of strategies to improve student engagement, goal setting skills and offer understanding of career options.
The College offers a broad range of programs to support students including celebrating Cultural Diversity Week, bullying prevention and extensive leadership development programs.
