Focusing Government Spending Where It Matters

The Carroll Labor Government respects your money.

That’s why Labor is making commonsense decisions about where government spends.

Making the most of our capable public service

The Victorian Public Service is capable and hardworking.

Currently, Government is too quick to engage consultants instead of relying on its own expertise.

That’s why we will target a $70 million reduction in spending on consultants and external advisers.

This step will save taxpayers money while valuing our public service workers and trusting their frank advice.

Consultants can still be engaged where there is a genuine need to deliver services or expertise when necessary.

Reducing unnecessary office spending

We believe in a no-frills system behind the scenes, with great services for the public on the frontline.

That’s why the Premier has instructed Ministers to cease new expenditure on non-essential items, including branded apparel and merchandise for internal staff use, and bronze plaques for politicians.

There will be sensible exemptions – this is about being careful, not inflexible.

The Premier has written to Ministers to ensure departments implement the advice.

More action following the Silver Review

Strategic policy advice should be delivered by departments. That was the message from the Silver Review.

The Government will accept two additional recommendations from the Silver Review to wind up the standalone Infrastructure Victoria and Economic Growth Victoria.

This doesn’t impact infrastructure or economic growth. It is about reducing duplication and promoting efficiency.

It builds on the Government’s decision to bring the Suburban Rail Loop Authority into VIDA.

In total, this means the Government is reducing public entities and boards by 29 in response to the Silver Review.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Finance Enver Erdogan

“Labor values your money.”

“These are commonsense savings – utilising our capable public service more than expensive consultants.”

“We don’t need branded merchandise or plaques, instead we want to focus spending on delivering high-quality services.”
