Flinders Street Station will be lit up in pink tonight ahead of the Breast Cancer Network’s Field of Women event at Sunday’s Melbourne vs Sydney AFL game.
As well as raising awareness by bringing breast cancer statistics to life, The Field of Women event raises funds for breast cancer research and reminds those affected by breast cancer they are not alone.
Installed as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s $100 million upgrade of the station, the cutting-edge lighting system will be used to acknowledge and celebrate special upcoming events.
On Friday 31 August the station will be lit purple to mark Wear It Purple Day, an annual event to promote support and acceptance for young members of the LGBTIQ community.
The station will be lit pink again every night from Monday 3 September to Friday 7 September for Women’s Health Week.
The launch of the light system completes the restoration of the station’s exterior which has seen the repainting of the building in its original colours, the leaking roof fixed, and the clock tower and dome interiors restored.
Upgrade works continue around the station, increasing space and seating for passengers and the restoration of the Elizabeth and Degraves Street subways.
The project has already completed works to make the station safer with extra myki gates, an additional entrance, improved lighting and an upgraded CCTV system.
