Minister for Training and Skills Steve Herbert has today visited Chaffey Secondary College in Mildura to speak with year 9 and 10 students about pathways after they leave school.

The visit is part of the Minister’s trip to Mildura, which includes a funding announcement at SuniTAFE, and a visit to a local business to discuss skills needs in the region.

Data revealed in the 2015 On Track Survey conducted by the Department of Education and Training shows one in three students who completed year 12 in the Mildura LGA went on to university.

The survey also showed that students who stay in school and complete year 11 and 12 or equivalent have more of a chance of going onto university or studying a VET qualification, which will lead to a job.

Apprenticeships are also a popular pathway for Mildura locals with double the amount of students choosing this pathway compared to the state average.

The Andrews Labor Government is investing in the training system to make sure all Victorian students have every opportunity possible to go on to further study.

Our $50 million TAFE Back to Work Fund is helping more than 7000 Victorians gain an apprenticeship or traineeship.

The Labor Government is supporting our Local Learning and Employment Networks with $32 million over four years to help disengaged youth.

A new $20 million Reconnect Program will provide foundation training to early school leavers to help them gain a qualification.

“It was fantastic to visit Chaffey Secondary College to speak with students about the many different pathways they can take up after leaving school.”

“Research clearly shows that students who finish year 11 and 12 are more likely to move onto further study so it’s vital we support those students who might be disengaged from learning.”

“The Andrews Labor Government is committed to supporting organisations and programs like the Reconnect Program which help early school leavers gain the foundation skills they need to move on to further training.”
