Victoria will export its health and medical research and experience to China and will reap the benefits of China’s expertise, following historic agreements struck today between the State and key Chinese provinces.
The agreements between Victoria and the Jiangsu and Sichuan Provinces, will enable new healthcare training programs for Victorian GPs and allied health professionals, joint ventures in bio-medical research and assistance to Jiangsu Province to help develop its aged care, primary and community health sectors.
A new exchange program will include training in Victoria for at least four Jiangsu medical doctors by the end of 2015 and will open the possibility for exchange for Victorian specialists in the fields of neurology, oncology, psychiatry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and dental science.
Premier Daniel Andrews today toured the Gulou Hospital at Nanjing, after witnessing the signing of agreements between the Victorian Government and the Jiangsu and Sichuan Provinces.
Jiangsu is Victoria’s oldest sister-state relationship and it’s hoped this health deal will build on an already successful 36-years of co-operation.
The Victorian medical technologies and pharmaceuticals sector has been identified by the Andrews Labor Government as one of six key sectors set to drive Victoria’s future economic growth. It employs over 20,000 people and generates $10 billion in revenue, largely through exports to global markets.
An agreement has also been reached with China’s National Health Development and Research Centre for Victoria to share expertise on health system design and funding reform.
With more than 40,000 hospitals across China, Victorian health experts will be able to export their skills in this area, including in policy implementation consulting, information management advice and training, and health service management programs.
